Meeting with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development – Mr. Saad Alfarargi


The experts from FODASUN had a private meeting with His Excellency Mr. Saad Alfarargi, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development at the UN Office in Geneva-Switzerland. This meeting was held on Monday, September 12, 2022; with the presence of the special rapporteur and the senior assistant, Ms.Antonella Pavlova and three members of the foundation. In this meeting, the institution and the history of its activities were explained to the UNSR. While welcoming the members of the foundation very warmly, Mr. Alfarargi gave an explanation about his mission.
The SR in an important part of his statements and in response to the invitation of the respected CEO to attend Iran; mentioned that there are two different ways to travel to Iran, each of which has its own process and requirements. I can visit Iran by either an official and formal invitation or an informal one. He also openly welcomed participation in the FODASUN,s annual conference. At the end of this meeting, a commemorative gift along with the works and brochures of the foundation was presented to him.
The Human Rights Council, in its resolution 33/14 of 29 September 2016, established the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the right to development. Mr. Saad Alfarargi was appointed Special Rapporteur for a period of three years and took up his functions on 1 May 2017. As part of his mandate, the Special Rapporteur contributes practical guidance for the effective realization of the right to development at local, national, regional and international levels. He also participates in integrating human rights in development work as well as representing the right to development in the 2030 sustainable development agenda.
Mr. Saad Alfarargi was appointed Special Rapporteur for the right to Development in 2017. Mr. Alfarargi has served as Ambassador, Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States to the UN in Geneva, Specialised Agencies and other International Organisations in Switzerland. He has published articles on economic development, international order, peace and security, disarmament and world trade and is a regular commentator on national, regional and international affairs.
